When to install turf?

The right time for new turf

If you are considering installing turf, you will surely ask yourself:When is the best time to do so?
The good news is that turf can be installed almost all year round—with a few exceptions. The decisive factor is not so much the season as the condition of the soil. When laying turf, preparing the ground is essential. To do this, the soil should be reasonably dry.

Spring and fall – the ideal seasons

Optimal growing conditions are found in spring and fall.

• the temperatures are mild,
• the soil has sufficient moisture,
• and the lawn can grow without stress.

When sowing seeds, it's crucial to ensure that young plants have sufficient time to develop before winter to avoid freezing, as this window can be quite narrow in autumn. For this reason, turf is the ideal solution in autumn,  because the already well-developed, robust plants can withstand cold temperatures and establish themselves without difficulty.

Installing turf in summer

Unlike sowing grass seed, laying turf is also possible in summer without any problems . It is important to water regularly and sufficiently so that the turf can develop roots again. In summer, the soil temperature is high and the turf grows particularly quickly. 

Turf in winter

You won't believe it, but turf can also be laid in winter without any problems. However, there is one restriction: if the ground is permanently frozen, turf cannot be harvested because the harvester's blade cannot penetrate the ground and the frozen root system cannot be rolled up. In the event of persistent frost or heavy rain, it is better to wait. As soon as the ground can be worked again, new turf can be rolled out. The plants in the turf are 1.5 to 2 years old and are therefore robust and do not freeze. As soon as the ground temperature rises, the turf awakens from hibernation and starts to grow. 

Conclusion: Turf installation is almost always possible

Whether spring, summer, or fall— turf is versatile and robust. As long as the ground can be properly prepared, we can lay your new lawn almost any time of year, and you can enjoy a permanently beautiful green space.
